Exhibit 8

Business Card

Background

For this exhibit, I decided to create a business card. I wanted to incorporate an intricate pattern in the design. I started designing business cards for some family and friends that have their own businesses. It has been something that I enjoy putting together. I see myself doing more of these in the future.

Design

  • I decided to pick a black background to make the business card more sophisticated. I also used white text to provide appropriate contrast.

  • I used grids and guides to ensure that everything was aligned properly. This is crucial for readability in a business card.

  • To create the pattern I started by utilizing the Pen tool and rubber band mode, creating the main shape. I then copied, pasted, and rotated a second shape. Using the step and repeat command I created the final circular design.

  • In this design, I used three different typefaces. I chose them because they blend together really well. I also used them to create a hierarchy by enlarging the text for the company title and the name of the person.

Revision

For this exhibition, I decided to make a complete makeover of the business card above. I started by changing the canvas size to a business card standard size 3.5" x 2.0". I sized up the founder name to be more prominent. This time I decided to use the company logo name as part of the background. I reduced the opacity in order to make the content pop and add more contrast to the composition. I grouped similar content elements together to create unity. I designed the composition using grids and guides in photoshop to make sure my elements are aligned correctly and to create balance. I think this change is cleaner and goes straight to the point of what a business card is made for.
